Silver Song Clubs are regular sessions of singing and
music making for older people and, where appropriate, their carers. Over
1500 older people attend a Silver Song Club each month and this number is
set to reach 2000 by the end of 2010. Silver Song Clubs take place in a
variety of venues including community venues, day care centres and hospital
settings.
The Silver Song Club model is a unique and protected
model of participatory music making driven by the latest developments in the
field of Arts and Health.
Sessions are delivered by trained facilitators and
supported by volunteers. Our volunteers come from a number of sources
including local music societies and senior citizen’s forums.
Sessions are fun and the music used is well known.
There is no charge to participants and we try to provide help with transport
where needed. There are no auditions and everyone is welcome. Most sessions
include refreshments and we encourage carers and family members to attend.

What Happens At A Silver Song Club
Silver Song Clubs are not passive, and do not involve
sitting and listening to others performing. Instead everyone joins in with a
range of musical activities including not only singing but also playing
percussion, using hand chimes and gentle chair based exercises.
Most of the music and songs will be familiar to
everyone involved and many sings are used because of their power to evoke
memories.
A typical Silver Song Club session will last 90
minutes, divided into two sections with a refreshment break in the middle. A
variety of songs will be used and activities will include action songs, hand
chimes, percussion and gentle chair based exercises. Most people leave with
a smile on their face and a song on their lips.

Musicians
and volunteers
Our musicians are chosen because of their ability to
inspire people to join together and sing.
We recruit and train facilitators from a variety of
sources and our musicians include profession performers, musicologists,
music therapists and community musicians. We also work in partnership with
other musical charities including Live Music Now and the Music, Mind and
Spirit Trust.
Our volunteers come from a variety of sources
including choirs, choral societies, pensioner’s forums and senior citizens
forums. Although we do not expect our volunteers to be trained singers an
interest in music is important.
We are always looking for new musicians so please
contact us if you are interested in becoming involved in our work
